Animal protection fence program

In high-altitude ecosystems, attacks by snow leopards on livestock often occur at night in pastoralist settlements. However, the lack of means for herders to protect their livestock often leads to cases of snow leopards preying on them.
In Mongolia, there is currently no system in place to compensate for the damage caused by endangered and protected animals listed in the Red Book, and the legal framework has not yet been established, which poses a challenge to the protection of these animals. In an effort to find innovative ways to solve this problem, the “Hashaa Khoroo Program” has been implemented among herders in Tost Bag, Gurvantes Soum, Umnugovi Aimag, since 2014, to improve the traditional fences of local communities, initiated by the IHS.
Under the program, 2m-high wire mesh fences with metal poles are loaned to herding households, and to date, more than 40 households from the nature conservation community have participated in the fence program. The implementation of the fence program has reduced livestock losses in the city, as shown by the number of households participating in the livestock insurance program and the number of livestock caught by leopards and wolves.

We also use wildlife deterrent devices in conjunction with our livestock enclosure program, which are designed to scare away predators by emitting a loud noise as soon as they sense wildlife movement.
