Snow Leopard Conservation Foundation (SLCF) was established in 2007 as a NGO aiming to study and help protect snow leopards western and southern Mongolia. The organization has two main components as; community-based conservation and scientific research. It runs a number of community-based conservation programs to manage human-wildlife issues and to bring benefit to local people who live in snow leopard habitat.
SLCF works closely with a number of organizations, including Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism (MNET), Institute of Biology, MAS, Mongolian Universities, Protected Areas of Mongolia, local governments and number of international organizations such as Snow Leopard Trust (SLT), Snow Leopard Network (SLN) USA, Zoos and Universities.
The snow leopard is an indicator species of healthy high mountain ecosystems, which support the cat itself, its prey, and a vast amount of biodiversity, as well as contribute to human wellbeing, locally, regionally, and globally.
These ecosystems are important not only as the home to this beautiful cat but also as the environmental and natural resources upon which hundreds of thousands of people also depend for water, pasture for livestock and food for themselves, mineral resources, medicinal supplies and products, cultural traditions and spiritual values.
It was listed in the Red Book of Mongolia in 1972 and prohibited for hunting.
