Tost Tosonbumba mountain region has been assigned to be under special state protection

Since 2009, Snow Leopard Conservation Foundation NGO has been conducting research and conservation work of snow leopards in the Tost Tosonbumba Mountain region of Gurvantes soum, South Gobi Province. Since 2010, mining has developed intensively and there have been issued 92 mining licenses in the habitat of ecologically important wildlife. Therefore, SLCF has been collaborating with the local communities, the MNE and the government to revoke the licenses. As a result of our hard work for many years and the active participation of the local leadership, the Tost Tosonbumba Mountain region was declared as State Special Protected Area under the category of Natural Reserves by the Parliament’s Order No. 35 dated April 14, 2016. For this project, SCF team focused on the attention of many parties involved and worked with the strategy of actively organizing information broadcast and promoting through media. Although the cancellation of 36 mining licenses was delayed throughout two Cabinet meetings, we reached our goal and protected the highly populated region of snow leopards not only in Mongolia, but in the world, which has become an important step in the history of nature conservation.
