Tost Tosonbumba Mountain, Gurvantes Soum, Umnugobi was declared as a State Protected Area with Nature Reserve status by order 92, Parliament of Mongolia in 2016. The declaration is in line with the millennium goal established in 1992 to protect 30% of Mongolia’s territory under environmental protection. The declaration highlights the importance of snow leopard and its ecosystem not only in Mongolia but globally.

Since it was established as Nature Reserve, SLCF has been playing an important role in setting up management mechanisms of the new Protected Area. A part of it was creating a management plan of the NR for 2022-2025 with participation of stakeholders. The Management Plan was approved by the Umnugobi Province Government with its order 6/7 on the 10th of June 2022. The management plan identifies 5 conservation targets in the NR and sets up goals and objectives by the SLCF team under guidance of MNET.

SLCF collaborates with NR administration under a contract/MOU to support the team and build their capacities to manage the protected area. We also established a Collaborative Management Committee to oversight management plan implementation as well as provide collaboration of stakeholders.
