The organization has two main components as; community-based conservation and scientific research. It runs a number of community-based conservation programs to manage human-wildlife issues and to bring benefit to local people who live in snow leopard habitat.

SLCF works closely with a number of organizations, including Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism (MNET), Institute of Biology, MAS, Mongolian Universities, Protected Areas of Mongolia, local governments and number of international organizations such as Snow Leopard Trust (SLT), Snow Leopard Network (SLN) USA, Zoos and Universities.

Importance of snow leopard ecosystems

The snow leopard is an indicator species of healthy high mountain ecosystems, which support the cat itself, its prey, and a vast amount of biodiversity, as well as contribute to human wellbeing, locally, regionally, and globally.

These ecosystems are important not only as the home to this beautiful cat but also as the environmental and natural resources upon which hundreds of thousands of people also depend for water, pasture for livestock and food for themselves, mineral resources, medicinal supplies and products, cultural traditions and spiritual values.

“ The Tost Tosonbumba area in the South Gobi Province of South Mongolia is a unique environment for both humans and wildlife. It consists of desert steppe and rugged dry mountains with an altitude range between 1600m and 2400m above mean sea level. Tost Tosombumba neighbors the Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area A to the south west and the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park to the north, forming an important corridor for wildlife. These 3 national parks along with other National Parks are part of the GSLEP South Gobi Landscape (82000 km2)- a priority landscape for snow leopard conservation in Mongolia identified by the national government “

“ Since 2009, SLCF has been advocating for the legal rights of communities to manage their pastoral land and for local governments to support them in this effort. SLCF initiated a process to help protect land rights among 30+ partner communities across Mongolia. This process involves delineating and mapping community land, a Community Responsible Area (CRA), based on traditional resource use and grazing patterns. A CRA is defined as “an area of land dedicated to the protection, maintenance and sustainable use of natural resources, and managed through local communities with legal entities” (Dudley, N. (Ed.). (2008)”.
